While we can’t be together in person, check out the videos below to learn what makes Freire unique—and whether Freire Wilmington might be the right school for your child.
School Done Differently
Freire Wilmington was founded in 2014 to help students get into college. Six years later, the results are clear and compelling: 98% of Freire Wilmington’s Class of 2019 were accepted to at least one college or university. Already this year, our current seniors have been accepted to more than 200 colleges and universities. On top of that, Freire’s Class of 2019 raised over $6 million in scholarships and financial aid.
Freire Wilmington is dedicated to creating a fully rounded educational experience. From Black History Month events like Paint Night and the Poetry Slam to sports, clubs, field trips and special experiences, there is an energy at Freire Wilmington that just keeps growing—and we want you to be a part of it!
With just over 100 students per grade, Freire is a school where teachers know your name. It’s easier to make friends and build community when you’re not one in a thousand. Our highest priority is making sure that students feel safe, seen, and engaged in our classrooms and throughout our schools. Freire Wilmington is a tight-knit family in which every student can focus on themselves and their education.
“My teachers at Freire made my dreams into possibilities for the future. They made me push myself forward and keep the mindset that I am needed, I am important, and it’s okay to be different.”Hannah, Grade 11
“You need to decide if you’re really willing to succeed in the future. If you want to get a head start on going to college, Freire’s a good place for that.”Victoria, Grade 9
“You need to be challenged early on so you can face challenges in the future and in college. It’s not like other schools. It’s not like you come to school, do your work, and get out. You come to school to be a part of the Freire family.”Joshua, Grade 12
“There’s no tolerance for bullying, no fighting. That was what made me realize this was the right school for me. We’re all a family, and you have a voice here. If you tell a teacher something is going on, they’ll help you.”Spirit, Grade 10
Freire Wilmington is all about Graduation x2 – graduation not just from high school, but from college, too. The proven Freire model provides challenging academics and comprehensive supports that will help guarantee your success at Freire, in college, and beyond.
If you want to go to college, Freire is where you need to be. The Freire Schools Network sends more of its graduates to college than almost any other public high school in Delaware. In fact, only 3 of the 36 Delaware public high schools exceed the national average (68%) for college enrollment.
Freire’s rigorous college-prep curriculum is designed to ensure that every Freire student graduates with the credits required for acceptance at any top college in the US. This includes four years each of English, math, science, and social studies, as well as three years of foreign language study. In addition to these intensive requirements, we offer a variety of courses that engage students deeply with their learning and bring to life connections between students’ classwork, their communities and real-world issues.
High Standards, High Supports
Freire’s rigorous curriculum and strong academic counseling will challenge your student to achieve at a higher level than ever before—and make sure they have the support they need to get there.
Laptops for Everyone!
Starting this year, Freire offers one-to-one technology, with a laptop provided to every student for use at home—not only making real integrated learning possible during school closures, but revolutionizing the way Freire students learn in the years to come.
Freire’s dedicated college counselors work closely and carefully with every student starting in 8th grade to make sure they have everything they need to attend the best college for them—from applying and being accepted, to applying for financial aid, to having all of the academic skills they’ll need to thrive in college.

The World is Your Classroom
Learning at Freire isn’t confined to the classroom—and it doesn’t stop when the school day ends. Student life at Freire blends challenging academics with a wide range of after-school activities, field trips, and sports to help you grow into exactly the kind of well-rounded student colleges are looking for. Freire students have traveled as far as Madrid and Paris, and take part in sports and activities ranging from basketball and cross country to robotics, art, chess, dance, student government, and many more!
Freire students also visit a different college campus each year so that by the time you apply to college, you have a strong idea of the many options available to you.
Safe Location, Easy Transportation
Located in the heart of Wilmington, on the banks of the Brandywine River in the historic Midtown Brandywine neighborhood, Freire uses the city as a living classroom. As a Freire student, you’ll experience a wide array of community resources, museums, theaters, and natural and historical landmarks, all just footsteps away.
Freire is located in one of the safest neighborhoods in downtown Wilmington. With school buses that travel throughout New Castle County and the option of free DART passes for those who want them, getting here every day is easy. And after-school bus routes ensure that no matter where you’re coming from, you can participate fully in school activities.

Plus, starting 8th grade at Freire means joining a community of motivated, high-achieving peers to learn and grow together for the next five years.
8th grade is a critical year to start a college-preparatory education. Why wait another year to find the right school?
