School leaders are often asked by prospective donors, “Why should I support a public school? Isn’t that what my tax dollars are for?” Yes, taxes do help support public schools, but that funding source is not enough to run a first-rate school in this day and age. Compounding matters is the fact that charter schools get significantly less funding than traditional public schools, as charters do not receive funding for capital expenses. When the school roof gets a leak, for example, a charter school has to use the money it set aside for its students’ education to fix it.
Therefore, every dollar earned in fundraising enables a school like Freire Wilmington to invest more fully in its number one goal: unlocking the potential of Delaware youth. We need your help to reach this goal.
As we grow in Wilmington, several opportunities exist for you to contribute to the successful launch of what we hope is to be Delaware’s premier open-admission college preparatory high school.
